Chapter 9

She finished her tea and found herself laughing and talking with Lila like they were old friends. She also gave her reassurance on any baby-related worries and told her what she could expect. She accepted the vitamins that Lila handed over. Karen stopped her from getting up and walking with her to the door, mindful of how big she was. She waved goodbye to Lila.

Shutting the door and steeling her spine, she expected to find Samiel waiting by the jeep, but she couldn’t see him anywhere. Putting her hands on her hips beside the jeep, she tapped her foot and rubbed at her head.

“Sorry,” he rumbled as he appeared from nowhere. Her heart jumped and she glared at him for frightening her. He shrugged broad shoulders and held up a vitamin drink. “For you.”

She swallowed back her snark as she took it.

Their fingers brushed and she felt an electric current pass between them. He didn’t comment on it, but his lips twitched. Hugging the drink to her chest she could feel his warmth under her fingers and caressed the bottle.

Feeling ridiculous, she bought it to her lips took a sip, and made a sound of delight. It tasted better than she thought it would. A mixture of sweet and fruity, and it was thick – it reminded her of the texture of honey.

“Thank you,” she said politely then winced. She sounded like she was talking to a relative stranger, and they were many things…but they would never be strangers.

He sighed heavily and put his hands in his pockets. “Will you come for a walk with me?”

Biting her lip, she shook her head. His shoulder drooped and his eyes flared with dejection and acceptance. Why acceptance? If she were rejecting him, would he give up that easily? It was the acceptance that had her talking. “I don’t think it’s a smart idea to walk when I’ve been feeling faint. I should probably sit somewhere.”

“Shit! You’re right,” he growled, and his claws punched out of his hands.

“What’s wrong?”

“I’m not very good at this,” he admitted.

“This?”

“Looking after people.” He grimaced and pursed his lips. “Humans in particular.”

“I don’t need you to look after me,” she said. His eyes flared with frustration leaving her feeling like she was being sharp with him. “Besides,” she added, her voice softening. “You did fine this morning.”

He nodded once and opened the Jeep for her. “I have somewhere else in mind, somewhere we can go,” he said and jumped into the Jeep. “Not much walking involved,” he added.

“Okay, let’s go.” Whether it was today or tomorrow, or even next week. They needed to talk about what happened and why he thought he knew about her past.

He drove for a while until they came to a manmade pond and benches placed around it. He opened her door and she got out carefully testing her balance. They walked between two small hills and bushes.

There were man-made lumps of earth with fresh grass laid over it. It smelled earthy, like dirt or hay, but also contained a note of sweetness and rain.
